The Diocese of Kroonstad was established with the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy of South Africa on 11 January 1951. The Diocese is dedicated to St Patrick, also Patron of the Cathedral, as many Irish soldiers settled in the area after the Second Anglo Boer war.
The Cathedral is a gem of South African Architecture and contains works of art by Maud Sumner, Eduardo Villa, Cecil Skotnes and many others.
