St Mary’s Basilica was blessed and opened on 15 May 1904. St Mary’s was the only church in Invercargill city at that time and was regarded as the mother church in Southland. It still retains that central function today though there are now 3 further parishes in the city. The church is another designed by noted architect Francis Petre who made a significant contribution to church architecture in the South Island of New Zealand.
