The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis King of France is located on Jackson Square in New Orleans, LA. It is known as the oldest active Cathedral in the United States . The current structure which was built in 1793 and reconstructed in 1851, stands on the original site of the first Catholic Church in Louisiana, erected in 1718, making it the city’s center of Catholic worship for nearly 300 years. Dedicated as a Minor Basilica in 1964 by Pope Paul VI, one of its most memorable events was the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1987. The Cathedral is the most notable icon of the city and visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the world yearly.
