Late Bishop Mathai Kochuparampil sdb, the first Bishop of the diocese, had the blue print of the Cathedral ready in 1985 and started building it in 1986. The foundation stone of the Cathedral was blessed by His Holiness Pope John Paul II on 4th February, 1986. In record time the 152 feet by 48 feet Cathedral was built and was blessed and inaugurated by Bishop Mathai himself on 8th March 1987 in the presence of the Archbishop and Bishops of the region. It was given the name "The Cathedral of the Risen Lord." The sanctuary in the Cathedral is beautifully adorned by the Crucifix, the Tabernacle, the granite altar, the Lectern, the Baptismal fount, and the statues of Mary Help of Christians and St. Joseph. The history of salvation is depicted in beautiful paintings on both sides of the walls. There are also figures of the apostles and saints depicted in fiberglass. The Choir-loft accommodates the singers and the musicians. Two confessionals set on either side of the main door serve to bring healing to the souls. The portico leads to the main door of the Cathedral. The main door is made of solid wood that has intricate carvings. The facade houses the statue of the sacred heart with open arms, and a replica of the pieta. And topping it all there is the cross that can be seen from miles around. Today the Cathedral has become a landmark and the principal attraction for pilgrims and tourists.
