In preparation for the Jubilee of Mercy, the Visa Office of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization (PCPNE) have signed a Modus Procedendi that can facilitate the issuance of an entry visa for Italy for the faithful who intend to come on pilgrimage to Rome and other holy sites in Italian territory.

In the righthand column of this page some helpful documents are available:

  • the application form to present to Embassies or Consulates to request this type of visa;
  • a set of practical instructions for filling out the request;
  • the list of countries for which a visa is necessary;
  • the text of the accord established between MAECI e PCPNE.

It is important to know that:

1. The process for requesting the special “Jubilee-Tourism” visa is reserved exclusively for pilgrims participating in a diocesan pilgrimage (or with a group from within the diocese) that is organized by a local Coordinator appropriately designated by the Local Ordinary.

2. The local Coordinator will compile the list of participating pilgrims (using the form that can be downloaded from this page), for whom he or she becomes the guarantor to the Italian Government; the Coordinator presents this list to the Embassy or competent Consulate when requesting the visa.

3. At the same time, the same local Coordinator should send a copy of the same list as soon as possible to the PCPNE.  The copy of the list should be sent both through the Apostolic Nuncio and directly to the PCPNE by email (attaching a scanned copy in PDF or other image format of the same list that was submitted to the Embassy).  The email address to which to send the copy of the lists is visa@im.va

4. To benefit from this process, it is necessary to begin it well in advance.  We recommend that you present the list at least 40 days before the anticipated departure of the pilgrimage. The visa application at the Embassy or Consulate will remain blocked until the PCPNE has received the copy of the participant list.

5. It always remains a possiblity for any citizen needing an entry visa to submit his or her own request without using this special process.
